I have been missing all the blooms in my garden, so a trip to the garden center was in order. Straw flower will do well on my patio in full sun, so this was my first pick.
This is a plant I bought in October, it never stopped blooming thru the freeze. The name is hummingbird, it looks like little hummers in flight. It seems to have thrived in the winter weather. Maybe another two would be better than one?
Shasta daisy has been in this pot for 4 years and also has thrived in the freezing weather, another keeper.
I saved the best for last, this is purple Aster, it been in the ground for about 6 months. It seems like the perfect plant for Florida, but I never see it in the garden centers. Full sun, draught tolerant, freeze tolerant. Whats not to love. When I find these again many more will be added to my garden. Happy New Year.

Love that hummingbird plant. Hmmmm... Manny's??? Where to find it?
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to plant a few things to get some immediate color. Your purple aster is Stokesia... a native plant that endures the winter weather well. I love mine, too.
Meems
P.S. Your new blog background is a really pretty.
I love your new blog background Janis, so pretty :-)
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about missing blooms. I'd really like to get some color in my garden too.
Love the new look to your blog. All the colorful flowers you have now are great to look at too. I don't grow any of them. Hmmm..I might have to change that. I am especially interested in the native aster.
ReplyDeleteMeems, The Hummerbird plant came from George and Cindy's plant sale in North Tampa, but they are set up at all plants sale around Florida. I want more of the Asters, who has them in stock?
ReplyDeleteJayne, I am NOT good at this blog thing, it took me two days to remember how to change the background.
NanaK, I got those Asters when we went to Colorfields Farms and I want more!Janis
I,too, love the new look.Especially the photo in your header.
ReplyDeleteI must get me some of those asters!
Hi janis...I'm always amazed at how straw flowers feel. Love that hummer-looking plant. Do you know the name? I'm always on the lookout for cold-hardy plants. The asters are amazing. One of the few flowers in my garden that the butterflies are attracted to. I bought mine at a local nursery, but you really don't see them that often and they are a great plant. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteChris, I hope you find some of those asters too.
ReplyDeleteSusan, The name of the hummingbird plant is Justicia suberecta, Daves Garden has information on it. Janis
